My 14 year old son was regularly given morphine over a 6 week period in hospital. It helped with the pain. He was administered it constantly via IV and when he was on the ward he had an infusion pump so he could administer it himself. Advantage: it quickly helped the pain to go away. Advantage of the pump: he could self-regulate, this kind of independence is very important at his age. Disadvantage: the many side effects, mostly the constipation. He suffered so much that he had to have enemas to make sure his bowels were properly emptied. Other stool thinners didn't always work.
