With this medicine, my ulcerative colitis was kept really well under control. I fell pregnant in 2014 and it was apparently fine to keep using azathioprine during pregnancy. At 6 and a half months I developed cholestasis which led to the premature birth of my daughter. At that point luckily I had given up azathioprine so I could breastfeed. Nothing had previously been known about premature births. But it was fine. My next pregnancy (without medicine), I didn't develop cholestasis until 38 weeks. My obstetrician thinks that the azathioprine probably did have something to do with the early onset in my first pregnancy as it affects liver function. I'm just glad that my daughter survived it!
