Ferinject

Ferric carboxymaltose (1gr) for anaemia

It's the second time I'm getting ferinject. While I was getting the medicine I got a rash and a sensation of tingling in the throat, which went away after a while. After the first day I got extreme fatigue, dizziness and some difficulty breathing. My stress levels also got high but that could be because of the tiredeness I experience. The 1st time I got it, these symptoms lasted for more than 2 months. The 2nd time is now, it's been 1 week and it's really awful, I feel completely depleted of energy and mostly lying in bed. I really don't want to use it again unless I have no choice.

45 minutes after 1000mg Ferinject I developed a localised arm rash and a few hives over the rest of my body. I also had a hot sensation around my throat area. This all disapeared in half an hour or so. A few hours later I suddenly became very ill, shaking, muscle twitches, feeling like I was going to pass out, abdominal discomfort. This passed after half an hour also after laying down. A few hours later I had extreme hunger and got hypoglycemic symptoms if I didnt eat hourly (day and night) - and Im not a diabetic at all. This continued for a few days. On day 3 I had uvula swelling, dizziness, shaking, diarrhea and ended up in emergency. It settled with a antihistamine and was discharged with a antihistamine. 4 days later had deeper throat swelling with dizziness, shaking etc (not relieved by the antihistamine). Back to emergency again. Was given IV cortisone, oral prednisone and a different type of antihistamine as well. Symptoms disapeared. Was discharged with a 3 day dose of prednisone and antihistamines. 5 days later throat swelling returned. So back on prednisone and antihistamines. It had now been 7 weeks since the iron infusion. That is 7 weeks of recurrent angioedema of the throat. All test results have come back clear for other possible causes of the reaction (and longer reaction). I have no other medical conditions and take no other medications. Side note - The Ferinject was 1000mg given in 200-250ml normal saline, but was accidently given in 5 minutes instead of 15 minutes (this may or may not be relevant to the reaction). I am a 42 year healthy female. I was iron deficient only, not anaemic (due to a heavier menstral period and long term vegetarian diet)

I have regular ferinject infusions all together. They are rough on my body, I get very tired, leg pains, restless legs. At its worst I get horrific stomach pains and feel as if I am dying. They have tried to make the dose smaller instead of 1000g I get 500g, this helps. However if my HB is very low and I have a dose of 500g, I feel very ill for 2 - 3 days. 1000g is too much for my body in one hit. I also find it works best if they do it over a longer time. When I feel better, the hassle is worth it as my anemia often feels life limiting - but it's a very tough call. Sometimes, I want to avoid the infusions all together.
