Ferinject

Ferric carboxymaltose (50mg/ml) for anaemia

I've read that other people have had reactions like muscle pain to Ferinject. The first day there was no reaction apart from a bruised feeling in my legs. The second day I was shivery just as I was last time, day two and three at night the nausea started and I was listless, like I had flu or something but I had exactly the same thing 3 months ago but I'm now lying in bed with a temp of 38.5. I had heard so many people say that it gets better slowly so you need to have the infusion slower and this time I was laid on the bed for 1.5 hours for flushing and then the 1000 mg...how long are the side effects supposed to last? There's also Monofer that might help, or doing it slowly...but the sickness is the worst.

It's difficult to know what's a reaction, and what is the ongoing result of very severe anaemia, as nursing staff insist that Ferinject can take a month to be felt (healthy effects). The first infusion was 1000 and I am not the highest body weight (perimenopausal heavy bleeding and long term vegetarian diet may be the culprit of the iron deficiency). After the first infusion, I was pretty much bed-ridden for 12 days: tachycardia, severe chest pain, extremely irritating pulsative tinnitus, long headache, difficulty standing or walking, vision loss (temporary thank God) and new ''floaters'' in vision which are actually still there a couple of weeks later, shaking, swollen tongue with metallic taste, ongoing hair loss. Felt like I was dying tbh. Today, I had my second and last infusion (for now) of 500 - look at lots of forums and they diluted it more than standard and allowed me to have it infused gradually over an hour. Much better - still the fat tongue and some pulsing in temples and lightheaded but I feel better. You can get hypothermia from large and fast infusions like my first one as it's a cold liquid going into warm blood and a shock to the system, as well as the iron itself. I now feel optimistic that in a month I should, hopefully, be feeling better and will always ask for a slower infusion from now on (also check your details as they had mistakenly calculated a higher dose for my bodyweight which luckily I spotted before infusion 2). My diet is immaculate during this as you also need to help yourself as best you can with nutrients. Good luck.
